Privacy Policy

1. Information We Collect

We collect only the information needed to make TeakReader work. The information we collect depends on whether you use the app as a guest, create an account, upload content, subscribe, or enable notifications.

Guest Users

You can use TeakReader without registering an email, Apple, or Google account. In guest mode, the app creates an anonymous backend identity so core features can work, usage limits can be enforced, and Premium can be purchased or restored. Guest data may include your saved books, imported content, reading progress, vocabulary status, flashcards, highlights, daily usage, and subscription status. We may also process your IP address or a device-generated guest identifier server-side to enforce daily limits and protect the service from misuse.

Linked Accounts

If you link an email, Apple, or Google sign-in, we may collect account information such as your email address or authentication identifier. Linked accounts help you access your library, learning progress, and Premium entitlement across supported devices. The learning data we store is generally the same type of data stored for guest users.

Uploaded Content

If you upload EPUB files or import subtitle files, TeakReader stores and processes those files to provide reading, vocabulary extraction, word-frequency analysis, CEFR-level analysis, comprehension analytics, flashcards, and progress tracking.

Purchases

If you purchase a Premium subscription, payment is processed by Apple App Store or Google Play. You do not need to register an email account to purchase Premium, but the purchase is associated with your current guest or linked app identity so Premium access can be provided. We do not receive your full payment card details, but we may receive subscription status, receipt, transaction, store account, or entitlement information needed to provide Premium access and support restores.

Push Notifications

If you allow notifications, TeakReader may use push notifications to send learning reminders, streak reminders, review reminders, or account and service updates. You can disable notifications in your device settings.

2. How We Use Information

We use information to provide and improve TeakReader, including to:

• Sync reading and learning progress across devices when you use a linked account.
• Restore Premium purchases, and restore your library and progress when a guest or linked identity can be matched.
• Power vocabulary tracking and FSRS spaced-repetition flashcards.
• Generate word-frequency maps, CEFR analysis, and comprehension analytics.
• Provide dictionary lookup and translation features.
• Enforce free-tier, upload, translation, and usage limits.
• Provide Premium subscription access.
• Send optional push notifications.
• Maintain security, prevent abuse, troubleshoot issues, and improve app reliability.

3. Third-Party Services

TeakReader uses third-party services for core app functionality:

• Free Dictionary API — receives individual words; returns definitions and phonetics.
• Microsoft Translator API — receives words or sentences; returns translations.
• Project Gutenberg — receives book search queries when you browse the public-domain library.
• Apple App Store and Google Play — process subscription purchases and provide entitlement information.
• RevenueCat — verifies purchases, manages Premium entitlements, and helps restore purchases across devices and app installs.
• Apple Push Notification service and Firebase Cloud Messaging — deliver push notifications if you enable them.

4. Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal data. We also do not use tracking cookies or third-party advertising cookies.

We may share limited data with service providers only as needed to operate TeakReader, such as translation, cloud hosting, authentication, push notifications, subscription verification, analytics, crash reporting, or technical support. These providers are used to support app functionality and are not permitted to use your data for their own unrelated purposes.

We may receive anonymised, aggregated crash reports and performance metrics from Apple App Store Connect and Google Play Console. These reports do not contain personally identifiable information and are used solely to fix bugs and improve stability.

5. Data Retention

Guest and linked account data remains stored while the app identity is active so TeakReader can provide your library, uploaded content, learning progress, Premium access, and analytics.

Uploaded EPUB and subtitle files remain attached to your guest or linked identity unless deleted or your account data is deleted. For Free users, upload limits are enforced as lifetime limits, so deleting an uploaded file does not reset the upload allowance.

After you delete your guest data or linked account, your data is permanently purged from our systems within 30 days, unless we need to retain limited records for security, fraud prevention, legal compliance, subscription records, or enforcement of lifetime limits.

6. Your Rights

Depending on where you are located, you have the following rights regarding your personal data:

Under GDPR (EU / EEA users)

• Right of access — You can request a copy of the data we hold about you.
• Right to rectification — You can correct your email address and data from within the app.
• Right to erasure ("right to be forgotten") — You can delete your guest data or linked account in-app, which triggers permanent deletion of your data within 30 days. You can also request deletion by emailing support@teakreader.com.
• Right to data portability — You can request an export of your account data.
• Right to object / restrict processing — Contact us at support@teakreader.com.
• Right to lodge a complaint — You have the right to complain to your local EU supervisory authority if you believe your data has been processed unlawfully.

Under India's DPDP Act 2023 (Indian users)

• Right to access — You can request information about what personal data we process.
• Right to correction & erasure — You can update or delete your guest data or linked account data at any time.
• Right to withdraw consent — You can withdraw consent by deleting your account. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of prior processing.
• Right to grievance redressal — Contact us at support@teakreader.com. We will respond within 48 hours on business days.

To exercise any of these rights, email us at support@teakreader.com with the subject line "Data Request". We will respond within 30 days.

7. Account and Data Deletion

You control your account and data:

• Delete your guest data or linked account from within the app (Account Settings → Delete Account).
• Or email support@teakreader.com with subject "Delete My Account" and we will process it within 30 days. For guest data, include enough information for us to identify the guest session.

Deleting your guest data or linked account permanently removes or anonymizes your account information, uploaded books and subtitles, vocabulary data, flashcards, highlights, and reading progress from our servers, except for limited records we must retain for security, fraud prevention, legal compliance, subscription records, or enforcement of lifetime limits. Deleting app data does not cancel a subscription managed by Apple App Store or Google Play.

8. Children and Students

TeakReader is an educational app that may be used by students and younger learners. TeakReader is not intended for children under 13 without permission from a parent or guardian. If you believe a child has provided personal information without appropriate consent, contact us at support@teakreader.com and we will take appropriate steps to delete the information.

9. Security

We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your data against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. In the event of a personal data breach, we will notify you and the relevant authorities as required by applicable law.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in our practices or applicable law. We will update the "Effective Date" above and, where material changes are made, notify you via an in-app notification or email.
